Angelina Jolie’s Those Who Wish Me Dead Opens At #1

There may have been a cold snap around Australia but Those Who Wish Me Dead got everyone’s blood pumping, smoking competition with a strong $1,222,999 opening (including sneaks) following its release last Thursday May 13, putting it 36% ahead of the other new opener, Chris Rock’s horror Spiral.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan (Hell or Highwater) and also starring Nicholas Hoult, Aiden Gillen, Jon Bernthal and Medina Senghore, Those Who Wish Me Dead is based on the 2014 novel by Michael Koryta. The exhilarating film marks the first time audiences have seen Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie in an action role in a decade and the first major Hollywood production for 14 year old Brisbane-based Finn Little who caught national attention in the title role of 2019’s Storm Boy.

Angelina Jolie stars as Hannah, a smokejumper still reeling from the loss of three lives she failed to save from a fire. She takes a sort of comfort in the pain she inflicts on herself, whether it’s a showy stunt that knocks her on her ass or the self-imposed solitary confinement of her watchtower high above the Montana wilderness. However, when Connor, played by Australia’s Finn Little, arrives in her remote territory—a skittish young boy who appears bloodied and traumatized—they must set out together to cross the miles of thick forest. Braving deadly lightning storms that threaten even Hannah’s well-honed survival skills, they are unaware of the real dangers they face: two relentless killers hunting Connor from one direction, and a massive fiery blaze coming straight for them, quickly consuming everything in their path. Caught dead center between two evils, can Hannah keep them alive long enough to save Connor and ultimately set herself free?

The film also stars Nicholas Hoult (the “X-Men” films), Finn Little (“Reckoning”, “Storm Boy”), Aiden Gillen (“Game of Thrones,” “Peaky Blinders”), Medina Senghore (“Happy!”), Tyler Perry (“Vice,” “Gone Girl”), Jake Weber (“Midway,” “Homeland”), and Jon Bernthal (“Ford v Ferrari,” “Wind River”).

Oscar nominee Sheridan (“Hell or High Water,” “Wind River”) directed from a screenplay by Michael Koryta and Charles Leavitt and Sheridan, based on the book by Koryta. Steven Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Aaron L. Gilbert, Kevin Turen and Sheridan produced, with Steven Thibault, Ashley Levinson, Andria Spring, Jason Cloth, Richard McConnell, Kathryn Dean, Michael Friedman, Daria Cercek and Celia Khong executive producing.

The director’s behind-the-scenes creative team included his “Wind River” director of photography Ben Richardson, production designer Neil Spisak and costume designer Kari Perkins, and his “Yellowstone” editor Chad Galster and composer Brian Tyler.

New Line Cinema presents a BRON Studios/FILMRIGHTS Production, in Association with Creative Wealth Media, a Film by Taylor Sheridan, “Those Who Wish Me Dead.”
